Terms of the chassis measurement

Spreading

is the angle, around which the kingpin or the steering axis of rotation is against the vertical inward bent above. Thus develop resetting forces, which bring the wheel after a driving along curves back in straight-ahead position.

Camber and spreading angles determine together the position of the point of contact of the front wheels on the roadway. By spreading the lever arm, at which the wheel forces attack, becomes smaller, which facilitates an hitting of the wheels. Additionally roadway distortions on steering do not affect so strongly the steering element.

The measurement of the spreading angle is made indirectly by a reciprocal steering angle from 10 or 20°.

Spreizungswinkel

Spreading angle, indirectly measured over 20° of an steering routine
